A range of plants and animals are protected by law in the UK.  These include:

  • All species of bats and their roosts
  • Some other mammals including badgers, otters, dormice and water voles
  • All wild birds and their nests
  • Amphibians such as Great Crested Newt and Natterjack Toad
  • Some flowering plants, lichens and mosses
  • Some rare insects, molluscs and other invertebrates

The level of protection afforded to these species varies from the strict protection afforded to bats and Great Crested Newts to more limited protection for some other species.

Because protected species have to be taken into consideration by planning authorities when making their decisions a survey for any protected species that could be affected by a proposed development is frequently required before the application can be determined.
